oscar nominated shorts: truth, beauty and a picture of us

Australian short film makers have a long and prestigious history in the annals of the Academy Awards. Twenty years ago, Adam Elliot won Best animated short for Harvie Krumpet. This year, Lachlan Pendragon is vying for the same honour with his idiosyncratic, AN OSTRICH TOLD ME THE WORLD WAS FAKE AND I BELIEVE HIM.

You can see this film  along with the other films nominated during the first two weekends in March, prior to the Oscars® Ceremony on Monday March 13 (Australian time).

FULL LIST OF OSCAR® ANIMATED SHORTS

Running Time:  97 Minutes

An Ostrich Told Me the World is Fake and I Think I Believe It – Lachlan Pendragon, Australia, 12 min.

If there was a Harvie Krumpet Award, this quirky cartoon would win.

Ice Merchants – João Gonzalez and Bruno Caetano, Portugal/France/UK, 15 min. Visually interesting and esoteric narrative sweeps you up in wonderment.

My Year of Dicks – Sara Gunnarsdóttir and Pamela Ribon, USA, 26 min. A litany of virginity losing ploys and misadventures boldly presented in various styles of animation. A tight, terse and very funny coming of age story.

The Flying Sailor – Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby, Canada, 8 min. Apparently based on a true story, The Flying Sailor is short, sweet and three sheets to the wind.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse – Charlie Mackesy and Matthew Freud, UK, 33 min. Quite simply a beautiful film with gorgeous images, impeccable performances from Tom Hollander, Idris Elba and Gabriel Byrne and solid sentiment about life, love and cake.
