BARE THE MUSICAL (Bare: A Pop Opera) debuted at the Hudson Theatre in Los Angeles, California, running from October 2000 to 25 February 2001.
The year is 2000, this thought-provoking rock musical is set within a private Catholic co-ed high school, St Cecilia’s Boarding School. We see the auditions and the rehearsals of the high school’s musical version of Shakespeare’s ROMEO AND JULIET.
Secret lovers Peter and Jason, are two gay high school students, and experience their constant romantic struggles with great sensitivity, centred around their identity and sexual preferences.
This is a breathless ride showing the daily reality of their lives before and after spring break, up to and including graduation.
This production sticks to the original version of BARE and contains transcendental new songs and clever pop music, that are a masterstroke of originality.
Issues of teen exposure to sexuality, remain relevant and fresh.
Director/Choreographer Hannah Barn has chosen an outstanding cast of new talent, and ensured that BARE maintained all of its heart and its soul, and also improved the script with minor updating and localisation.
Federal Parliament urgently needs to change the Marriage Act to no longer discriminate against the LGBTQ community, but the Catholic Church still preaches that only heterosexual behaviour is acceptable, whilst many other Christian religious institutions have accepted change.
Beautiful musical theatre entertainment for all, providing an uplifting island of joy and fun. All cast members have powerful voices and put their heart and energy into every song.
With this final show of the year, The Depot Theatre again delivers a legendary show. Recommended.
