A fascinating new series of talks is launched in 2022, broadcast from the Australian National Maritime Museum and presented live, online.
Curators and guest presenters dive deep into maritime history, science and Indigenous cultures, exploring stories, experiences and insights and objects from the collection.
BENEATH THE SURFACE delves into a wealth of subject matter, including shipwrecks, Aboriginal maritime knowledge of Sydney harbour, soldiers at sea, notorious conmen and missing millions, sea life in art, nautical fashions, the White Star Line service to Australia, the Endeavour, national search and rescue – and more.
The first session, presented by the museum’s Head of Knowledge Dr Peter Hobbins, considers the experiences of Australian military personnel, sent overseas aboard troopships, from the Soudan Contingent of 1885 to the ‘Vung Tau Ferry’ during the Vietnam War.
‘Troopships and citizenships: what can we learn from listening to soldiers at sea?’ explores changing ideas of citizenship, in the context of wartime sacrifice.
