ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA by COME YOU SPIRITS THEATRE COMPANY @ THE CONCOURSE in Chatswood

The Chatswood rendition of ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA is nothing short of a theatrical gem, being a vibrant, fast-paced, and utterly captivating reimagining of Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy. Presented by COME YOU SPIRITS THEATRE COMPANY at THE CONCOURSE in Chatswood

This production, condensed into a brisk ninety minutes, with outstanding actors and is magnificently performed. A masterclass in how to balance brevity with brilliance, delivering all the passion, power, and poignancy of the original while injecting a fresh, modern energy that feels perfectly at home in the heart of Chatswood.

From the moment the lights dim, the audience is swept into a whirlwind of drama and intrigue. The chemistry between the two leads is electric, with Antony and Cleopatra embodying the larger-than-life personas of the legendary lovers, while also revealing their human vulnerabilities.

CLEOPATRA is a pure force of nature, equally commanding, and seductive, and utterly magnetic. ANTONY shows the internal struggle between duty and desire, is portrayed with a raw intensity that lingers long after the final bow.

The ensemble’s ability to seamlessly transition between scenes and characters, is a testament to their skill, and also the director’s sharp vision.

The production’s minimalist staging in two locations is a stroke of genius, using clever lighting, a few key props, to evoke the grandeur of ancient Egypt and Rome. This also adds a delightful touch of humour and relatability, grounding this epic tale.

What truly sets this production apart is its ability to distill the essence of Shakespeare’s sprawling narrative into a tight, cohesive performance, and without losing its emotional depth or dramatic impact. The pacing is brisk but never rushed, and the emotional beats of the story of love, and betrayal, plus an ultimate tragedy-land with surprising weight. Set in Egypt, performed among you at the Chatswood Concourse Lounge, with a tomb-like intimacy, you will be transported.

ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA is a triumph of creativity and craftsmanship. This is the superb production that proves Shakespeare’s work can be both accessible and exhilarating, even in the most unexpected of settings. Evocative music, beautifully enhanced the performances.

Whether you are a seasoned Bard enthusiast or a newcomer to his works, and this is must-see performance of ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, that will leave you thoroughly entertained and deeply moved. Highly Recommended. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
