Carrie Kablean is a London-born, Sydney-based writer, whose journey across the world included eight years living and working in Papua New Guinea. She was editor of the local newspaper on Bougainville during the island province’s 1980s push for autonomy and secession. Arriving in Sydney in 1990, she was invited to write about her experiences for The Australian newspaper and remained on the paper’s journalistic staff for 22 years.
Concurrently, she was the Sunday Telegraph’s theatre critic for 11 of those years. Carrie is now a freelance writer and editor and has written across many magazines and websites, including megaphoneoz.com. She is interested in social history, the arts, theatre, film, travel, trying to speak Spanish and reading as many books as she can. In 2018, her first novel What Kitty Did Next was published in the UK; a second, set in Tudor England, is a work in progress. Carrie has been interested in theatre since she was a teenager. It has been some time since she acted (on a stage), although she is accustomed to public speaking and radio interviews. Years ago, when she lived in PNG, she had roles in productions such as The Importance of Being Ernest, How the Other Half Loves, Absurd Person Singular, The Sunny South, pantomimes and other shows that were scripted by fellow thespias. She considers it fortunate that there is no record of any of these performances.
These days, she is more than happy to follow and promote Australian theatre and the arts scene in Sydney.
