brett whiteley”s love affair with birds

The Lyrebird 1972-1973

Whiteley was fascinated by the beauty and character of birds throughout his life. From childhood he would watch birds in flight and nest, observing their movements and character. As an artist he continually captured their personality, trying to understand and know these extraordinary creatures. In drawings, paintings and sculptures  Whiteley wanted to express his joy, humour and love through birds.

The exhibition, ‘Brett Whiteley ‘Feathers and  Flight’ runs at the Art Gallery of New South Wales Thursdays to Sundays until 2021.
