The South African Film Festival (SAFF) returns from May 4 to May 31, with an action-packed program of compelling films, engaging discussions, and – through its support of Education without Borders – the ability to change lives. With both in-cinema and online screenings, SAFF brings South Africa’s rich storytelling tradition to audiences across Australia and New Zealand.
This year’s program includes some of South Africa’s most acclaimed and talked-about films.
Indicative of the skill, passion and drive of South African film making is DEATH OF A WHISTLEBLOWER, a nail biting thriller of true social significance.
When ballsy investigative journalist Luyanda Masinda narrowly survives the assassination of her whistleblower lover, she joins forces with his inside man, the shadowy Albert, to expose the use of corruption and state capture by a powerful private security force intent on promoting chemical warfare in Africa and the Middle East, and the prevailing shortcomings of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Frightening, heartbreaking and finely calibrated, DEATH OF A WHISTLEBLOWER is a profoundly disturbing story of a woman emboldened and ennobled by a monstrous murder and a cover up by corrupt and unbridled capitalism.
A classic narrative from screenwriters Ian Gabriel, Kelly-Eve Koopman and Philip Roberts, with tight manipulation of suspense by director Ian Gabriel, and a standout performance from Noxolo Dlamini as Luyanda, DEATH OF A WHISTLEBLOWER is essential viewing.
SAFF 2025 runs from 04 to 31 May, in select cinemas and online. Tickets are now on sale.
