Music In The Regions Ltd a new independent touring organisation which will connect classical musicians with regional audiences has been announced.
Professional and emerging NSW musicians will perform in regions not traditionally visited by classical musicians and chamber orchestras, transforming regional venues into concert halls and fostering a vibrant, world-class standard NSW classical music industry.
Expressions of Interest are now open for Music In The Regions first Executive Director to guide the new organisation financially, socially and artistically through its early days. The Executive Director will lead the program of performances, launching in 2022.
Naseema Sparks AM, Chair of Music in the Regions board, said the organisation will support up-and-coming professional musicians and small-to-medium classical music companies with more performance opportunities by touring across the state. While on tour, the companies will work with the regional conservatoriums and with performing arts centres and local councils to become part of the region and to invigorate local musical life.
“Music In The Regions is a ‘slow touring’ concept initiated for the people of regional NSW, which will appeal to emerging and established professionals as well as the small to medium classical music sector. Our first step is to appoint the inaugural Executive Director who will play a vital role in building the organisation and delivering opportunities to musicians and delight to audiences around the state,” Naseema Sparks said.
The initiative began with a recommendation to the Minister of the Arts Don Harwin, from the Create NSW Classical Music Artform Advisory Board. A feasibility study, conducted by Mary Jo Capps AM followed, recommending the establishment of a standalone touring body for the small to medium classical music sector.
Minister Harwin said, “we want to make sure that no matter where you live in NSW, audiences have access to classical music performances, and that we continue to provide career and performance pathways and opportunities for classical musicians and groups, especially at this time when it is needed most.”
To request a position description for the Executive Director role, applicants are asked to email admin@music-in-the-regions.
Other positions at Music In The Regions will be announced following the appointment of the Executive Director, with the first programming to be announced in 2022.
