Deep and profound is all well and good but gosh sometimes it’s just great to see something breezy and sexy! Stella Green Productions double, ‘ Angry Young Women in low-rise jeans with high class issues’ and Byron Kaye’s ‘Mile High’ fitted the bill perfectly.
New York playwright Matt Morillo’s ‘Angry Young Women’ was written as a number of different skits. There were some hilarious moments. My favourite scene a spoof on the blue movie skit. The stage became a blue movie set featuring an array of colourful characters. There was the sleazy porn star who just enjoyed making the moves, and wasn’t interested in anything else. It was a wonderfully comic performance. Then there was his reluctant young female partner who couldn’t relax and carry out the scene. There was the over the top, teutonic, temperamental director who kept on getting aggravated by the on stage antics. He was even further frustrated by his temperamental cameran. Finally there was the actress’s girlfriend who was very feisy and independent, and the director was considering asking her to leave.
Byron Kaye directed ‘Angry Young Women’, the set was designed by Tom Bannerman, and the cast included Megan Alston, Celia Bickmore-Hutt, Adam Cleland, Mitch Firth, Justin Thomson, Emma Leonard, Phoebe Leonard, and Fiona Boiti.
Byron Kaye’s ‘Mile High’ was performed after interval. This was a two hander featuring Megan Alston and Sebastian Goldspink. A couple whose relationship has been a little rocky of late, decide to travel overseas for a holiday, and the play follows them through from the start to the end of the aeroplane flight.
‘Mile High’ wasn’t as breezy as ‘Angfry Young Women, but still had lots of laughs. it was a breezy , refreshing night of theatre.
