the australian dream: a satirical almanac

Feet are the natural stocking fillers, ankles and legs too, I sup-hose, but Yule tide lapping at the shores of the gift giving gulf of consumerterria demand other items to stuff the Christmas sock.

Put your money where your foot should be and slip a copy of THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM,  a bewt book from the Betoota Advocate, into your Yule leggings.

Betoota is rich in deposits of irony and it’s excavated on every page of THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM, a slag heap of satire set in the nation’s new hot spot, in particular, the cosmopolitan bustle of the French Quarter and the circular driveways of Betoota Heights.

Of course, there’s discourse and dispatches from the five other arrondissements of Betoota – the Old City District, Betoota Grove, Lake Betoota, Betoota Ponds and the Flight Path District – in the demographics, culture, and the all important property guide.

THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM is a marvelous BS of PR, a pull the other one, it plays advance Australia fair piss-take that has the air of a fart in a bottle.

Its aim is true as it skewers the self satisfied, the self aggrandising, and self centred in politics, religion and society.

Betoota may be the jewel in the crown of the Diamantina, but the flaws are a microcosm of Australia at large with moral and ethical values as soggy as a beetroot sandwich.

Betoota has all the charm of a regional city, all the pensive melancholy of a country town, and all the soullessness of a big city, born from the bibulous notion that the Australian ideal is the Fair Go, which has the gaudy appeal of a fairground attraction.

A careful reading of THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM is that Australia is truly the land of “Fuck you, got mine”. And there may be a pun intended.

It’s yours for the price of a six pack if you’re into designer brews, and wont make you belch or bloat. You can plunge and purge or dip in and sip, either way THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM will help you laugh away the nightmares of past, present and future.

If you can’t sell up everything and move to Betoota, at least buy thIs book.

THE BETOOTA ADVOCATE: THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM is published by Pan Macmillan.
