We were lead up and down adjoining terraces in Kings Cross as the story of F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novella THE GREAT GATSBY unfolded within the various rooms of what is now called The Wonderland Bar.
I felt engaged throughout the two hour plus show. Beth Daly’s direction and the performances of all the cast were excellent.
Ryan Hodson as Nick Carroway, J. C. Peardon as Jay Gatsby, Jessica Redmayne as Daisy Buchanan, Joshua Ralph McElroy as Tom Buchanan and Hannah Raven as Jordan Baker played the major roles with aplomb.
The show ran for two hours plus with a few party intervals where drinks were served, and songs performed in 1920’s style. The great costumes were of the period.
A few young women in the audience were dressed as flappers in keeping with the show.
There’s one warning about the show and that is that there is a lot of walking up and down stairs, so be prepared for some heavy exercise!
Verdict. I loved the show. This GREAT GATSBY was an incisive, visceral experience. The show is strongly recommended for students who are studying the book for school or university as it really brings the book alive. For those who haven’t read the book, seeing the show might well inspire them to buy the book.
