Sparked by the 25th anniversary of the Academy award-winning blockbuster Shine, THE MUSICAL MIND: A PORTRAIT IN PROCESS explores the mysteries of the musical brain.
Featuring exclusive, intimate footage, the film is a glimpse into the private worlds and distinct musical processes of four superstar musicians, brought together through their connection with the blockbuster movie Shine and its director Scott Hicks.
Rich and informative, THE MUSICAL MIND: A PORTRAIT IN PROCESS acts like an ear worm, hooking the eye and the imagination with a pitch perfect portrait of Daniel Johns, American rock maestro Ben Folds and classical pianist Simon Tedeschi.
Johns openly discusses his synesthesia and wonders whether it’s a symptom or gift. Tedeshi ponders whether prodigy is a gift or curse. Music is a sanctuary but also a cell, especially when chained to competition and celebrity. And Ben Folds quips and quirks among the quavers.
Threaded throughout is David Helfgott whose story inspired Shine. As this picture proves, his penchant for the pool is equal to his passion for the piano, his water fetish reflecting the fluidity of his playing. These days he shares his talent with the latent, the next generation of emerging musicians, a dearly loved mentor.
To pictorially illustrate the efficacious legacy of these four enormous talents, portraits, created on camera by renowned artist Loribelle Spirovski, are interwoven through the brilliantly orchestrated narrative. One yearns for a documentary focusing on this particular artist some time soon.
A celebration of the individuality of the creative brain, THE MUSICAL MIND: A PORTRAIT IN PROCESS explores the remarkable ability of four extraordinary musicians to channel their unique instincts and individual neurodiversity into sublime musical creations, unlocking profound emotion through the universal language of music.
Scott Hicks, movie maestro that he is, is able to mix tone, timbre and tempo and bring a harmony to the distinct musical minds of this fab four, styling a symphony from these prodigious talents with an insatiable desire to make music.
It should inspire anyone with an interest in understanding the role of music in human life.
